This month the Washington Education Association presented the Take the Next Step Kidz Club with the 2016 WEA Human and Civil Rights Community Partner Award. The Monroe-based group works in partnership with teachers to serve low-income and homeless elementary school students, both during and after school, offering homework help and life experiences that many students would otherwise be unable to access.

The 40-plus volunteers are driven to help the students in the program feel empowered to learn instead of embarrassed if they are struggling.

WEA Vice President Stephen Miller visited the club March 22, 2016, to present the award. He chatted with students and thanked Kidz Club Coordinator Raylin Lucey and the many volunteers that keep the program going.

WEA member Pam Wilson nominated Kidz Club for the award.
