Congratulations to Moriah Von Behren, a student at Mt. Spokane High School in the Mead School District, whose artwork “Pride & Unity” was selected by WEA as our top choice.

“I would like to share that I feel extremely honored to have been given this award,” explains Von Behren. “Art has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it has always been a safe escape from reality. The piece ‘Pride & Unity’ was one of the more vulnerable pieces that I created for my AP portfolio this year. I wanted to create something that was honest and real and in that there was beauty. I had no intentions of winning anything I simply wanted to share this message of love with more people. However, receiving this recognition has given me the confidence to continue to be real and express my true self. I truly hope this piece can inspire others as much as it has inspired me.”

Art teacher, Angelika Wilson-Wipp had this to say about Von Behren, “It has been a great joy to have Moriah Von Behren as a student in my AP art program at Mt. Spokane High School for the past two years. Moriah is a mature and self-directed learner, eager to grow in her skills. Art has always been a vehicle of expression and depth for Moriah. We are so excited and honored that Moriah’s piece ‘Pride & Unity’ was selected by WEA.”

The Superintendent's High School Art Show is an annual event hosted by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Washington Art Education Association. Washington state high school students participate in this artistic celebration each year. In spring, finalists are invited to the Superintendent's High School Art Show.
